Vale of Glamorgan - A Great Place to Live...
Well if we didn’t already know this but The Vale of Glamorgan came fourth in a competition of ‘where’s the best place to bring up a family’ in a survey by Reader’s Digest.
Reader’s digest polled parents across the country about factors affecting family life. People were asked their most important requirements for a family-friendly area, state schools, local colleges and universities, crime rate, local hospitals, affordable housing, and employment amongst other questions.
The factors they looked at were weighted, based on the importance that parents gave them. The results then were measured against statistical and demographic portraits of all 408 local authority areas in England, Scotland and Wales. Using Government figures for crime, unemployment and house prices they ranked each area.
Reader’s digest report that they compared cities, small towns and rural districts, none were without problems but the one’s that scored highest were classed as those areas that can provide what parents want most for their families.
Scotland did well with no fewer than three winners, including 1st and second place, this was largely to do with its good schools and affordable housing. The vale of Glamorgan was the only Welsh area that made it into the top ten.
The winning areas are predominantly rural, only three of the top ten includes towns with populations greater than 40,000. Inner Cities ranked fairly poorly, with Newcastle upon Tyne being the highest scorer in 180th place.
So this goes to show how fortunate we are to live in The Vale of Glamorgan, let’s be proud of our community and aim for the number one spot next time.
